Coventry finished the season on a high with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Malta international Michael Mifsud gave Coventry a 1-0 half-time lead with the game's first shot on target.

Jay Tabb made it 2-0 10 minutes after the break before Paul McVeigh pulled a goal back just after the hour.

The two sides had played out a largely uneventful first half with a distinct end-of-season anticlimax about the occasion with both sides playing only for prize money.

Andy Gray went close for Burnley inside the first minute but his left-foot shot from 12 yards cleared the bar.

The hosts created much of the early pressure and home defender Wayne Thomas headed wide from an outswinging Wade Elliott corner in the 12th minute.

A scrappy opening phase was otherwise devoid of chances as both side's were frustrated early on.

Coventry's first chance came just after the half hour but midfielder Isaac Osbourne's shot from the edge of the area was blocked by Joey Gudjonsson.

Mifsud put the visitors ahead in the 40th minute with a left-footed strike from the left side of the area. City broke two against one but it looked like the chance had gone when Michael Doyle found the striker.

Burnley made two half-time changes, with Steve Jones replacing Alan Mahon and McVeigh coming on for Ade Akinbiyi, and the game burst into life with both sides exchanging shots in the opening minutes.

Mifsud went close from the middle of the box, drawing a fumbled save from Burnley keeper Brian Jensen.

The hosts went straight down the other end but Andy Marshall comfortably dealt with Gray's speculative shot.

Soon after Mifsud had another chance from the edge of the box but it flashed wide and Elliott also went close for the Clarets in similar fashion.

Tabb extended the visitors' lead in the 56th minute when the midfielder broke into the box to finish Kevin Thornton's through ball.

Thomas headed wide shortly after for Burnley from a corner before substitute McVeigh pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when he finished coolly past Marshall from Gudjonsson's central pass.

Jensen saved comfortably from another Tabb effort and Liam Davis replaced Kevin Thornton in midfield for Coventry with just over 20 minutes left.

Kevin Kyle almost restored a two-goal lead but his shot crept past the right post and Mifsud again went near.

Jensen was at full stretch to tip a Kyle header round the post and Thomas missed a late chance to equalise as his close-range header from Elliott's free-kick went over.

The Clarets piled on the pressure late on but could not break through.

Burnley finished the season in 15th, while Coventry ended two places below them in 17th.

The Sky Blues ended the season with a 2-1 victory against Burnley at Turf Moor.

After a tentative first half, City took the lead five minutes before the break through Michael Mifsud. Jay Tabb doubled Coventry's lead on 55 minutes and substitute Paul McVeigh pulled a goal back for the Clarets to set up a tense finish but City held out for a deserved victory.

Iain Dowie made three changes to the side which lost 1-0 against West Brom last weekend.

Colin Hawkins recovered from an achilles injury and returned to the side at centre-back in place of the suspended Ben Turner, while Kevin Kyle came in for Dele Adebola up front - the latter having an operation on his groin on Thursday.

Tabb came into the side for Stephen Hughes, who had been suffering from illness this week but made the bench.

The Sky Blues had a very young list of substitutes, with Liam Davis, Andy Gooding and Lee Hildreth all on the bench.

The opening 10 minutes was a lacklustre affair with neither side creating any clear cut chances. The next 15 minutes followed in similar fashion before Michael Mifsud carved out City's first opportunity of the afternoon with a fiercely struck volley which was smartly blocked by Wayne Thomas.

The deadlock was broken five minutes before half-time when Mifsud fired past Brian Jensen. From a Burnley corner, the Sky Blues piled forward and Michael Doyle found Mifsud lurking just inside the area and the Maltese international picked his spot at the near post to put City in front.

Ade Akinbiyi nearly drew Burnley level moments before the break when the former Stoke City striker hit a shot from 25 yards out which went inches wide of Andy Marshall's goal.

Steve Cotterill rang the changes for the Clarets at half-time with Steve Jones and McVeigh replacing Alan Mahon and Akinbiyi.

Mifsud was giving the Burnley defence a torrid time and three minutes after the restart, the striker tested Jensen with a shot from 18 yards. Moments later Mifsud went close from six yards but could only guide his shot wide of the post.

The match was starting to liven up after a poor first half and with 53 minutes on the clock, Elliott hit a shot from distance which sailed over Marshall's bar.

City doubled their advantage on 55 minutes through Tabb. The former Brentford man raced on to a through ball from Kevin Thornton and finished with aplomb from the edge of the area to score his third goal of the season.

The Turf Moor outfit pulled a goal back seven minutes later when substitute McVeigh dispossessed the ball off Isaac Osbourne and ran into the area and coolly buried the ball past Marshall.

With just over 20 minutes remaining Davis replaced Thornton. Marcus Hall went close with a header from a Doyle corner before Kyle unleashed a shot from distance which went inches wide of Jensen's post.

Mifsud could have wrapped up the game for City when he raced past the Burnley back-line to find himself clean through on goal but the pacey striker lost his composure and scuffed his shot.

Shortly after Kyle tested Jensen with a glancing header from a Doyle free-kick, the Scottish international escaped his marker and the Burnley keeper did well to parry the header round the post for a corner.

With less than 10 minutes on the clock, Coterill's side threw everything forward including the goalkeeper and Wayne Thomas should have done better when he headed over from three yards out.

The Sky Blues weathered the storm and clung on for their first victory away from home since November.

A low-key end-of-season affair ended with visitors Coventry City claiming all three points at Turf Moor.

Coventry took the lead after 41 uneventful minutes with a swift counter-attack which twice involved man-of-the match Michael Doyle, before striker Michael Mifsud fired beyond Clarets keeper Brian Jensen.

Burnley should have equalised on the stoke of half-time with their only attempt at goal in the first half as a long ball from Eric Djemba-Djemba sent Ade Akinbiyi clear but he shot wide of Andy Marshall's upright.

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill responded to his side's ineffective display by making a double substitution at half-time, replacing Alan Mahon and Akinbiyi with Steve Jones and Paul McVeigh.

Coventry should have extended their lead early in the second half when Misfud twisted and turned on the edge of the box to create a shooting opportunity which brought a fine save from Jensen.

The visitors did go two in front when midfielder Jay Tabb beat the home offside trap to fire beyond Jensen.

Burnley pulled a goal back when Isaac Osbourne was caught in possession and on-loan Norwich striker McVeigh finished calmly beyond Marshall.

Mifsud should have made the game safe but pulled his shot wide from 18 yards, while Jensen kept his team in the match with an outstanding save from the head of Kevin Kyle.

However, Burnley should have equalised as Elliott's free-kick found the head of Wayne Thomas but he missed the target from close range.

The home team pressed hard towards the end with keeper Jensen advancing up field for three corner kicks, but it was the Sky Blues that stood firm to collect the three points.
